The AEG model of consilient business advisory services and client-centered value in both personal and professional areas is also being used to transform the US healthcare system.
A strategy known as the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) addresses the same deficiencies in healthcare diagnosis and intervention as AEG addresses in business advisory services. Specifically, specialized medical services and a fee for service model has reduced coordination, increased cost, promoted unnecessary services, lowered quality and increased risks of dangerous, sometimes fatal, care.
Consider that business advisory services have come to be provided in the same way. A company needs a legal, financial, operational, governance, customer, or other problem solved. Whether internally or externally diagnosed, the company selects an advisor highly experienced in that discipline or technical area. Even recognizing that both the diagnosis may be self-limiting and that the recommended action may have unintended consequences, the recommendations from the expert are created and implemented. This process is repeated across many issues, each of which is affected by factors outside the areas of expertise of those advisors.
The PCMH model often designates a patient’s primary care provider as the coordinator or “quarterback” to convene specialists to determine the best course of action and deliver needed care. As of 2015, PCMH appears to improve healthcare deliver across a range of measures, including better care access, lower costs, improved satisfaction, efficient resource use. It also has positive impacts beyond treatment including reduced ER visits, lower hospital admissions and readmission, prevention of disease and improved population health.
This shift from provider-centered to patient-centered services means the overall health of the patient and the population improve. Likewise, AEG’s approach focuses on integrating business advice across disciplines as focusing the owner’s wealth through business value growth. Both the way we select our advisors and the processes we use to help grow value and personal wealth are based on this recognized approach.
